On 23 June 2025, the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago and the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW-Madison) formalized a Donation Agreement at the historic Bascom Hall. Signed by Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano and Associate Dean Dr. Lesley Bartlett, the grant supports graduate-level field research through the university's Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS). This partnership aims to institutionalize Philippine Studies in the U.S. Midwest and bolster the university's existing research momentum.
The collaboration reflects a strategic commitment by the Philippine government to expand the global footprint of its academic and cultural heritage. Beyond funding research, the agreement paves the way for deeper institutional ties, including the promotion of UW-Madison’s extensive Philippine publication series and library collections. By strengthening these links, both parties aim to foster a more sophisticated understanding of Philippine history and society within the American academic landscape.
In early 2025, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at UW-Madison partnered with the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago to expand Philippine-related academic activities. Following a formal proposal process, an agreement was signed in June 2025 by the Philippine Consul General and UW’s International Division, securing a generous gift to fund specialized research initiatives.
These funds were specifically allocated to support the summer field research of two University of Wisconsin graduate students in the Philippines. The recipients, Inigo C. Acosta (Anthropology) and Brandon Thierry (Center for SE Asian Studies), utilized the grants to pursue advanced projects in their respective fields, strengthening the university’s scholarly engagement with the region.
