Under the Humboldt University Institute of Asian and African Studies, the Philippine Studies Program aims to strengthen Philippine scholarship, promote Filipino culture, and support academic, strategic, and operational activities.
The lecture on the "Homo Luzonesis" by University of the Philippines scientist Professor Armand Mijares marked the launch of the program in the university, including the 250th Birth Anniversary of German explorer Alexander von Humboldt and the 65th Anniversary of the Philippines-Germany Diplomatic Relations in 2019.
On 19 October 2023, the Humboldt University Institute for Asian and African Studies hosted a lecture titled "Control and Resistances in Broadcasting during Martial Law in the Philippines". Delivered by University of the Philippines Dr. Elizabeth L. Enriquez, the lecture examined the state’s efforts to monopolize and censor radio and television under the Marcos regime. It also highlighted how the media transitioned from a tool of state control to a vital instrument of resistance and rebellion, ultimately contributing to the restoration of democracy.
