The Philippines and Mexico have deep historical roots dating back to to the initial oceanic contracts of the 16th century, which paved the way for the emergence of of the modern world and today's global civilization. The program aims to create solid institutional foundations establishment of a permanent center of Philippines studies at UNAM.
On 9 December 2022, Chargé d’Affaires John G. Reyes and Dr. Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, Secretary General of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), signed a Donation Agreement to establish the Philippines Studies Program at UNAM. The donation from the Philippine government is dedicated to enhancing people-to-people relations between the Philippines and Mexico through academic programs, projects, and/or activities related to Filipino history, cultures, and society to be undertaken by the University, with the aim of creating a Center for Philippine-Mexico Studies and Cooperation.
On 14 December 2023, the Philippine Embassy in Mexico held a commemorative lecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Philippine-Mexico diplomatic relations. The event, which was part of the Philippine-Mexico Studies Program at UNAM, featured Marisa R. Winkler, Third Secretary and Vice Consul, as the resource speaker. Moderated by Dr. Iván Valdez-Bubnov, the hybrid lecture explored the deep-rooted historical ties and seven decades of bilateral cooperation between the two nations, specifically focusing on their shared political, economic, and socio-cultural milestones.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is a comprehensive institution dedicated to higher education, research, and the dissemination of culture. Its organizational structure is built around three key subsystems—education, research, and cultural dissemination—which collectively aim to train professionals and solve national problems. UNAM’s has two high school systems (the National Preparatory School and the Sciences and Humanities School) to 133 undergraduate programs and 41 postgraduate programs that offer 167 specializations.
For accessibility, the university utilizes an Open University and Distance Education system across multiple Mexican states and has decentralized its infrastructure through five Higher Education Schools established to integrate theory with practice.
Beyond education, the university maintains a research presence through dozens of specialized institutes and centers in both the humanities and sciences, while its Coordination of Culture Dissemination manages extensive assets, including Radio UNAM and thirteen museums, to share knowledge with all sectors of the population.
