The Island Tides Initiative is a premier Philippine Research Program at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. It is the only program of its kind embedded within a European art university. Moreover, it serves as a vital bridge between the Philippines and Austria, connecting the Filipino-diasporic community with a global audience through the lens of contemporary art.
The initiative explores contemporary artistic strategies from Southeast Asia and the Pacific. By investigating "archipelagic imaginaries," the program examines how art shapes global identities and knowledge-producing methodologies through public talks, workshops, and interdisciplinary research.
From 14-17 October 2024, the Island Tides Initiative and the Austrian Film Museum hosted acclaimed Philippine filmmaker Lav Diaz for a week-long residency. The event celebrated the "ideological father of New Philippine Cinema" through a series of public screenings, including Norte, the End of History and From What Is Before.
A four-day intensive masterclass was held at the Angewandte for 28 students from various institutions, including the Central European University. Led by Diaz and Hazel Orencio, the workshop explored filmmaking processes and fostered community through a unique session where the creators served Filipino food to the participants.
The week concluded with a collaboration with the Viennale Film Festival. On 18 October 2024, Orencio presented their latest film, Phantosmia, marking a successful bridge between the workshop's educational focus and international premier screenings.
