The Sulo Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU is a collaborative effort, supported by the Philippine Consulate General in New York, designed to create an innovative and interdisciplinary academic program. By leveraging NYU’s expertise in related fields like History, Sociology, and Asian/Pacific/American Studies, the initiative aims to advance scholarship on Philippine histories, cultures, and migrations within both local and global contexts. Ultimately, the program seeks to serve as a regional leader in the field, engaging with the large Filipino and Filipino-American community residing in the Tri-State Area.
The Sulo program, initiated by Philippine Senator Loren B. Legarda, focuses on expanding the interdisciplinary study of the Philippines to address the needs of Filipino immigrants in the United States. Its mission involves supporting the next generation of scholars through grants and fellowships, creating platforms for dialogue on historical and contemporary issues, and developing innovative courses. Furthermore, the program encourages the study of the Filipino language and builds global networks between scholars and artists, placing Philippine culture and history within a broad context that includes Southeast Asia, the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.
New York University, through Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative, hosted the 2024 “Sinehan sa Konsulado,” a flagship cultural program organized by the Philippine Consulate General in New York, to celebrate the richness of Philippine cinema and its role in reflecting Filipino history, culture and values. Held from 27 to 29 August at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, the event featured screenings of four Filipino films—José Rizal, Pag-asa, Ang Huling Katipunero, and Hinabing Pag-asa—highlighting Philippine historcal legacy, resilience, and evolving cultural identity. The program strengthened collaboration between NYU-Sulo and the Consulate while advancing Philippine Studies and fostering cross-cultural dialogue within and beyond the academic community.
