From Left to Right: Georgetown University Vice Dean for Undergraduate Affairs Mark Giordano and Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez
Formalized on 29 September 2025, the Philippine Studies initiative at Georgetown University is a strategic collaboration between the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the university’s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
Supported by a donation championed by Senator Loren Legarda, the program is integrated into the Asian Studies Program and the Global Human Development Program. It focuses on documenting the Philippine experience through the lenses of economic transformation, development policy, and international affairs. Under the guidance of Professor Erwin Tiongson, the program seeks to create greater visibility for the Philippines within one of the world’s most influential hubs for global governance.
The partnership kicked off with a high-profile signing ceremony featuring Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez and Vice Dean Mark Giordano. A cornerstone of this new chapter is a specialized Filipiniana Book Collection donated to the university, featuring a curated selection of titles ranging from The South China Sea Arbitration to the cultural documentary series Dayaw.
These resources are designed to fuel new research projects, conferences, and lectures that highlight the Philippines' pivotal role in the global community. Furthermore, the program is dedicated to uncovering the "hidden" history of the first Filipino students at Georgetown in the early 1900s, connecting the university's Jesuit tradition of service to the foundational era of Philippine nation-building.
Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., it is a global leader in international relations, law, and public policy, counting numerous heads of state and diplomats among its alumni.
Its location provides a unique vantage point for students to engage directly with the White House, the Department of State, and international financial institutions. By bringing Philippine Studies to this "Hilltop" campus, the program ensures that the Philippine narrative is not just a footnote in history, but a central part of the conversation on the future of global development and diplomacy.
