11 December 2024 | Deed of Donation signed between the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and McGill University
Program Coordinators | Former Philippine Ambassador H.E. Maria Andrelita S. Austria and McGill University Vice-President for Global Engagement Professor Anja Geitmann, Vice-President for Advancement Professor Marc Weinstein, and Dean of the Faculty and Arts Lisa Shapiro
Under the McGill University's Department of Economics, the Philippine Studies Program aims to increase the understanding of Philippine culture, history, and society among students and the broader community in Quebec and Canada. The agreement also aims for developing academic programs, projects, and activities focused on Philippine culture, society, and history, to bring greater recognition to the Filipino people and their heritage.
Moreover, the signing of the deed of donation coincided with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Philippines-Canada Diplomatic Relations in 2024.
On 17 October 2025, the McGill University Department of Economics organized the academic forum titled “Bridging Perspectives: Macroeconomic Policy in Advanced and Emerging Economies” aimed to strengthen academic partnerships and promote a deeper understanding of the Philippines in Canadian institutions through joint research, lectures, and dialogues.
The program opened with remarks by Professor Santiago Camara of McGill University, followed by a keynote lecture by Professor Larry Christiano of Northwestern University, who presented a comparative analysis of macroeconomic responses to global shocks, particularly shifts in U.S. fiscal and monetary policy. He underscored that monetary tightening in the U.S. has led to an economic contraction and reduced demand for imports, which in turn dampens foreign exports and contributes to economic slowdowns in countries heavily reliant on trade with the country.
Department of Budget and Management Undersecretary Joselito Basilio presented the Philippines’ macroeconomic outlook, highlighting sound fiscal management, steady growth, and ongoing reforms to sustain economic momentum, while Senior Economist at the Bank of Canada Mr. Matias Vieyra discussed policy responses of advanced economies, particularly the Bank of Canada’s approaches to inflation and financial stability.
The event, attended by around 35 participants, marked the first activity under McGill University’s Philippine Studies Initiative and provided an opportunity to build valuable linkages with McGill University, HEC Montréal, the Bank of Canada, and participating students.
